Jigokudani Monkey Park is world famous for having snow monkeys chillin in onsens and hanging out. They sit in their onsens, and chill out with the guests. However don’t use flash photography or they might attack you. They are cute and fearsome at the same time.
So I arrived at Nagano Station and paid around 2500 yen I can’t remember, to ride a bus for about 30 minutes to an hour to arrive at Jigokudani Monkey Park. I went during the winter so it was very slippery and snowing. I recommend boots if you go during the winter. When you arrive you’ll find hotels, ryokans, restaurants and such. To reach the monkey park you have to hike for about 30 minutes through the snow and the forest.
It’s really beautiful scenery but if you came to see monkeys then you have quite a trek ahead of you. The last bus is at 4 so plan carefully yo.
The monkeys are not on a touching basis. You actually really have to be careful. The baby monkeys are down to hang but don’t mess with them or the bigger monkeys will attack ya. They love playing in the snow and chillin in the onsen. The onsen however is full of monkey poop and monkeys so I’d say don’t bathe with the monkeys.
You’ll find this a worthwhile trip if you’re a lover of travelling and monkeys. It is a 3 hour Shinkansen train ride from Tokyo to Nagano so make it a day trip if you go!
