Ever since I’ve come to Japan I’ve experienced food that blows you away visually. This is not one of those places but it kicks your nuts to another level with flavor. Welcome to Wakadori. This small shop near Mishima Hirokoji has won the award for best Kaarage a few years back during a Kaarage Gran Prix tournament.
This isn’t a dinner set meal place. This is a place where you drink and eat kaarage. The restaurant is located in the night life area of Mishima and when you enter it doesn’t seem super special but the kaarage is on another level.Upon entering you get an small dish of pickles or snack. Then you order your kaarage. They definitely went for an interesting tin foil feel with the chicken though. However biting into the kaarage is just amazing. I feel like they fried it in Soy Sauce or a special oil because the skin is so flavorful. It’s a sweet fried chicken and it’s very crispy but the insides are hot and juicy. It goes well with beer, and matches it so well in fact unless you are under 20, I would recommend you to always have Wakadori’s chicken with beer.
Unfortunately it’s a very small shop so I can’t seem to find their official shop site but if you’re ever in Mishima Hirokoji check it out!
Wakadori is a 4 to 5 minute walk from Mishima Hirokoji station.
