Tori no Sanpei. Odawara, Kanagawa.
I’ve lived in Japan for about a year and a half now and have learned that Japanese people love fried chicken. With so many varieties of fried chicken you can easily get overwhelmed by the amount of choices. However on an off day I was walking through Odawara when my friend pointed out this small shop selling fried chicken outside. I was apprehensive at first but I gave in to the smell. The shop had a sign saying it won the Kaarage Gran-Prix competition, so I had high hopes.
The chicken was cold when I ate it but that didn’t stop me from realizing how good this chicken was. It was crispy, with the right amount of tenderness. Deliciousness that kept me wanting more. My only complaint was that it was salty. However it was only a minor complaint because damn this chicken was good.
I went again and ordered the 定食（Course meal/Set Meal). 6 pieces of their famous chicken, a bowl of shredded cabbage, miso soup, rice and some pickled vegetables. This definitely blew my mind. The chicken was crispy, and juicy. The cabbage and the rice complimented the fried chicken almost perfectly. Within minutes I had finished all my rice, 4 pieces of chicken, all the cabbage, and the miso soup. I was stuffed, and was allowed to take my remaining pieces of chicken home. It was about 1500 – 2500 yen but I believe it’s completely worth it. It was so delicious, I will definitely be back for more.
As of April 1st Sanpei no Tori has moved from the Oshare distract down the road. The address has changed.
